Scorching sun, only dry sand around – this is the places in where these ancient wonderful creatures live. How did they manage to inhabit the areas where other animals can’t dwell? What do we know about them?
To begin with, nowadays the scientists count about 700 kinds of scorpions. This animal is quite original symbol of a desert but the ones living in tropics and subtropics are more numerous and various. Usually they live high in the mountains on the height about 3-4 km.
Some people believe that scorpions are insects but this is a fallacy. In point of fact they are arachnids of the type arthropods.
These creatures of a desert are also known for their ability to process food without wastes. Their organisms can digest all the water from food they get, the only thing they give off in the surroundings is a little amount of dry sand. That’s why the scorpions living in a very dry deserts can do without water, they get it from food! Our plants can learn how to make almost a non-waste industry from this wonderful creatures!
There is other scary myth about them… Too sensitive people can’t sleep at nights… This myth is about that they try to sting a sleeping person deliberately. Of course for a relief of others, it is not true. The poison of scorpion is not lethal for an adult person but nevertheless the sting of some large tropical species can lead to a death for a child, unfortunately there are some registered lethal cases.
Do you know that these animals sometimes live in our houses? You shouldn’t be afraid, the question is about false scorpions – tiny arachnids which can dwell in books of libraries and archives, on the bookshelves in apartments. These “book-loving” animals are very useful for us creatures because they hunt for the tiniest insects which do harm for the books: ticks, dust-louses, wood fretters.
The final Curious© phrase:
“Dios no les da alas a los alacranes”
“(God doesn't give wings to the scorpions)”
(Mexican saying)
